Our CEO/Founder recently did a interview with Voyage Magazine. Read this article to know a bit about Perfume Surprise’s Journey so far.
Today we’d like to introduce you to Saffira Issa.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Saffira. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born and raised in Suriname, South America. I was raised by two entrepreneurial parents, so it was always my dream to follow in their footsteps one day and become an entrepreneur myself. I would always look up to my parents and hope that if I can grow up to become even a little of what they are, I would consider myself to have achieved a lot. I knew that business was my choice of study since day one. However, in Suriname, there are not that many opportunities when it comes to further your education. After graduating high school in 2009, I moved to Miami to attend college. It was really hard at first to adjust, coming from a small country to such a busy life.
Language was also a big issue. My native language is Dutch and I had to constantly translate everything in my brain from Dutch to English which at times took me a while, so I had people looking at me while waiting on their answers because it took me a while to answer them back while I was trying to translate it all. I had to even walk around with a dictionary for a while. I started at Miami-Dade College where I got my Associates in Arts in Business administration. After Miami Dade, I transferred to Florida International University where I received my Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing in 2013. After my bachelor, I knew I wanted to pursue a Masters degree in Entrepreneurship. After doing research, I found Nova Southeastern University to have the Entrepreneurship program that was close to me and did not require me to move to another state as I was living alongside my brother, so moving to another state would not be possible at all to maintain financially. Paying international student tuition and pay double housing situations would not be possible.
After completing my Entrepreneur program, I was researching and researching on what kind of company I can start. At that time, the subscription box business was rising and started to get a lot more popular. My mom and I share a big passion for perfume and we noticed that we would have a lot of bottles just standing there that we would end up not liking after a while or found a new favorite, so we kept buying new bottles. Perfume smells can change a lot depending on everyone’s PH level. So, what you smell in stores on a paper might not smell nice at all on you. I like to be surprised and after doing research on beauty subscription boxes on the market, I did not find an interesting Perfume box. Most beauty boxes only offer one perfume to try out for the entire month, which is not fun because what if the smell is not nice on you? You won’t have a second option left. I then decided why not do a Perfume Subscription box! And offer not one but 5 different perfume samples to try out.
The question was then, how do you stand out from your competitor? Deciding to go with 5 samples would already be a reason to be different from your competitors but what else can I add? Besides perfumes, I love to constantly purchase nice watches and jewelry. That is when I founded Perfume Surprise. A monthly Perfume and Jewelry Subscription Box. Perfume Surprise is a monthly perfume subscription service that offers luxury designer perfume brands and jewelry for you to enjoy for an affordable price. Each month, you will receive 5 spray bottles of 2.5 ml with designer perfumes and a jewelry set based around that month’s theme.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. Trying to get your name out there is hard. And having limited capital to start or do any major advertising opportunities. I was so excited to start that I did not properly wait to first to a pre-launch phase where I would gather customers thoughts and emails first. I did create a business plan first. I would reach out to beauty bloggers/YouTubers if they were interested in reviewing my box. Most said yes and some were asking a very high amount to do a one-minute youtube review video. I send out over a 100 boxes and I had at least 60% just keep the box and not even mention Perfume Surprise at all. This was still not giving me enough exposure. In the first 3 months, I had about 10-12 boxes max. My goal is always to have the best customer service and apply personal touches to all my customers. Word of mouth is what I wanted to create because it is a form of free advertisement but also, people are more likely to purchase something when they are recommended it by someone. I love all my customers. And no matter how big I might become, I would still love to keep a relationship with most of my customers and have the best customer service and rationalization.

Perfume Surprise is a monthly perfume subscription service that offers luxury designer perfume brands and jewelry for you to enjoy (and keep) for an affordable price! Each month, you will receive 5 spray bottles of 2.5 ml with designer perfumes and a jewelry set based around that month’s theme.
How we set ourselves apart is by adding a jewelry as well as offering 5 different samples of perfumes. What we also stand for is that one of the 5 perfumes are newly released on the market, which competitors do not do.
I am the proudest every month when I start to receive reviews of that month’s box. Reading such positive and happy comments fill my heart with so much joy and just make me feel proud of the road I’m on. Having customers mention my name in their review to personally thank me for such a great service and not just thank you Perfume Surprise. I especially feel really good when I read ” I cannot wait to receive my next box!”. I even have a few mother and daughters who subscribed and they then open their boxes together. Or I have some customers tell me how they call their grandchildren to come over so they can open their box together. How amazing is that! creating a family time bond.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck but in faith. Having faith and believing in myself and working hard. However, I am really thankful to have such great parents to have as my personal mentors. I can always get the best advice from them.
